Warsaw Unified flag football battled throughout the night but fell to Elkhart, 45-18, in Elkhart Wednesday. The Tigers continued to compete from start to finish despite facing a talented Elkhart squad that made several big plays throughout the game. Yohannes Schmitt provided an offensive spark for Warsaw, scoring a couple of rushing touchdowns with strong runs. Schmitt’s ability to find running room gave the Tigers some important momentum during the contest. Garrett Davis also made his presence felt from the tight end position, hauling in a couple of receptions and giving Warsaw another reliable option in the passing game. At center, Lillie Jarrett and Anna Seewald were steady once again, helping Warsaw maintain its offensive rhythm and providing consistent snaps throughout the game. The Tigers showed several positive moments on both sides of the ball despite the final score. Early in the second half, Sensi Sprankle found the end zone on a 40 yard run up the middle to keep the tigers in the game. Elkhart’s wide receivers were particularly impressive throughout the game, repeatedly making difficult catches downfield. Several of those touchdowns came on passes caught over the top of Warsaw defenders who were in excellent field position and had played the coverage well. Warsaw continued to battle and found another highlight late in the game when Autumn Columbia caught a short three-yard pass with time expiring. Columbia then turned the short reception into a 40-yard touchdown run, racing away from the defense to finish the game with an exciting play. The late touchdown was a fitting example of the Tigers’ determination to keep competing until the final whistle. Although Elkhart controlled the scoreboard, Warsaw showed plenty of effort, toughness and team play throughout the contest. Warsaw continues the Unified flag football season next week with home games against Wawasee and Tippy Valley.
