The Warsaw Tigers battled the DeKalb Barons on Monday night, but the Barons’ relentless offensive attack proved to be just a little too much as DeKalb came away with a 52–33 victory. DeKalb has built a reputation over the years as one of the most powerful offenses in Unified Flag Football, and once again, the Barons showed why. Despite the challenge, the Tigers continued to battle and received another stellar performance from Yohannes Schmitt. Schmitt once again showed off his incredible running ability, finishing with more than 100 yards on the ground and giving the Baron defense plenty to worry about. Early in the second half, Evan Goshert connected with Schmitt for a touchdown that helped keep Warsaw within striking distance and gave the Tigers some much-needed momentum. Schmitt also found Timmy Yeager several times through the air in the second half, but none was more impressive than Yeager’s incredible one-handed snatch along the Tiger sideline, which extended the Warsaw drive and ultimately set the stage for another Schmitt touchdown. Sensi Sprankle saw his first action of the season and made an immediate impact on both sides of the ball, doing an awesome job in his new role. Ann Seewald brought her trademark energy to the center position all night long and even added a few dance moves to keep her teammates fired up. Lillie Jarrett battled through a nagging ankle injury and still managed to put relentless pressure on the Baron quarterback throughout the night. Autumn Columbia turned in another strong defensive performance, continuing to make plays and compete from start to finish. The beginning of the second half brought one of the most electrifying plays of the night when Nathen Nette broke loose for a 35-yard touchdown run that was reminiscent of Jerome Bettis during his Hall of Fame Steelers career. Susan Spencer followed it up by running in the extra point and then promptly spiked the ball Meanwhile, Mason Anderson had a career night in the high-five department, handing out more than 127 high fives and proving once again that there may not be a more encouraging teammate in Unified Flag Football. The Tigers never stopped fighting, but DeKalb’s relentless air attack ultimately proved to be too much for Warsaw to overcome. The Tigers will now take the show on the road Wednesday night when they travel to take on conference rival NorthWood. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM, and Warsaw will be looking to bounce back with the same energy, effort and enthusiasm that has defined this team all season.
