Castro 5th at State Girls Wrestling Finals

Mariana Castro finished her final season as a Lady Tiger wrestler with a 5th place finish at the IHSAA State Finals in Indianapolis Friday. During the first round, Mariana wrestled a sophomore from Western and finished the first period scoreless. Western chose top position in the second period and Castro earned a reversal to take the lead 2-0 and then won the match by pin! Castro wrestled the second match of the day tough, but lost to the eventual runner up from Madison Consolidated. In the third round, she squared off against a junior from South Putnam. Castro wrestled a flawless match with zero points scored against her before she won the match by pin in the second period! Castro then moved up in the brackets to placement rounds to battle for 5th place. In a story book ending for Castro, she wrestled against a junior from Whiteland Community and it was scoreless through two periods. Whiteland secured the first takedown to lead 3-0, but Castro earned a reversal to draw to within a point at 3-2. With just 7 seconds left, Castro put her opponent on her back to gain two back points to win the match by one, 4-2 and secure a 5th place finish. Castro finishes her time at Warsaw as a two time qualifier and a two time top 8 finisher after placing 8th last year As a Freshman Castro became the Freshman Sophmore State Champion, ISWA Freestyle and Folkstyle State Champion, and a Fargo Qualifier! As a sophomore Castro earned a Regional Championship! As a junior Castro earned a Sectional Championship, 2nd place at Regionals, and 8th place at State to become the first IHSAA State Placer for Warsaw!! She also earned Academic All-State Now, her senior year, she has earned a Sectional Championship, 3rd Place at regionals, and 5th at State and Academic All-State again!
