Tiger Boys Wrestlers Score Big Win on Opening Night

The Warsaw Tiger Wrestling team kicked off their season with a 44-28 win over the Goshen RedHawks. The varsity action started at 144 pounds as Warsaw's Leo Castro earned a win by pin to put the team up 6-0. Goshen won the next two matches by major decision, but gritty efforts by the Tigers kept the bonus points to a minimum. Trailing 8-6, the Tigers sent Enrique Silva to the mat at 165 pounds. Silva secured the second win by pin for Warsaw and put them back up at 12-8. Goshen retook the lead for a moment after a win by pin at 175 pounds. The Tigers went right back on top after the 190 pound match as Liam Smith racked up points on the mat and won by tech fall. Now up 17-14, Warsaw got big wins from their big guys. Aydin Cook controlled the action throughout the duration of his bout at 215 pounds to pick up a 10-1 win by major decision. Owen Corbin followed up with a win by pin at 285 pounds to put the Tigers up 27-14 as the dual turned back to the lightweights. Tristan Wood was impressive in his quick win by pin at 106 pounds and Ivahn Martinez collected a win by forfeit at 113 to put the contest out of reach at 39-14. Goshen picked up a win at 120 pounds by tech fall to narrow the gap to 39-19. The Tigers notched their final "W" at 126 as Gabe Veit won by pin late in the 3rd period. Goshen finished the night with a win by decision at 132 and a pin at 138 to close the team score at 44-28. The night also saw 15 JV matches take place in the Tiger Den with Warsaw picking up wins in 8 of those. JV winners for the Tigers were Judin Garza (120/pin), Jivan Gooden (132/pin), Brandan Wolf (150/pin), Clayton Dias (157/pin), Luki Juarez-Silvestre (165/pin), Maddyx Derf (165/decision), Lucas Kimball (215/pin), Colten Beeler (215/pin). Warsaw starts the season at 1-0 in the NLC and overall. They will host the Hutch Memorial Duals on Saturday in the T-RAC.
